When it comes to supplements I typically believe in food first – always try and get your essential nutrients from a diverse diet. However, with modern factors like our soil is depleted of nutrients, our stress levels have skyrocketed, we’re eating more processed and packaged foods than ever, and we’re exposed to high levels of environmental toxins, we simply cannot get what we need purely through diet alone.
I love working with clients on creating a customized supplement protocol that works for their bioindividual needs and lifestyle factors. That being said, there are a few supplements that many of us could benefit from. They are:
✨ Vitamin D3 K2 – Vitamin D is essential for immune function, bone health, regular periods, blood sugar control and stress management. However, it’s very rare to have healthy levels without supplementation. While vitamin D3 helps your body absorb more calcium, vitamin K2 helps your body transport it to your bones and teeth rather than letting it sit in your arteries and other soft tissues.
✨ Magnesium – Magnesium is responsible for over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body, without it, we could not function. I always suggest taking magnesium in the evening because it’s also known as the relaxation mineral and is great for body + mind recovery. I recommenced magnesium glycinate as it’s the most bioavailable option, and the most relaxation focused of all the magnesium forms.
✨ Omega 3 – Fish oil supplements are critical for reducing inflammation as well as supporting thyroid health, and fertility function. It’s important to choose a balanced blend of EPA & DHA. If you worry about any fishy after taste, store your supplement in the fridge as this will help suppress any flavors.
✨ Digestive Enzymes – If we can’t absorb the food we eat, then we’re not reaping all the benefits of eating a diverse and balanced diet. Digestive enzymes, taken with meals, help your body breakdown food into easily digestible bits. I recommend taking them for help with protein, dairy, higher-fat meals, or when eating a late dinner and bedtime is around the corner.
